چکیده

Ivan Pavlov, classical conditioning involves the pairing of neutral stimuli with aversive or appetitive cues. This results in learning. Formally neutral stimuli now predict salient events. One form of Pavlovian conditioning is fear conditioning, the primary associative learning mechanism involved in aversive emotional learning. It is through this process that we learn to be fearful of people, animals, objects, and places. From a psychological perspective, it is one of best understood types of learning in mammals because the stimulus and response properties can be very carefully controlled. For these reasons, Pavlovian fear conditioning has served as a powerful animal model of fear and anxiety disorders including phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and possibly many of the “neurotic”

Genetics of childhood disorders: LII. Learning and memory, part 5: human cognitive disorders and the ras/ERK/CREB pathway.

873 Over the last few columns we reviewed how different forms of learning and memory occur in specific regions of the CNS. Spatial learning involves long-term synaptic changes in the hippocampus, while fear conditioning involves similar long-term synaptic changes in the amygdala. Key molecular players in the processes governing long-term synaptic modifications are members of the mitogen-activat...

Propranolol–induced Impairment of Contextual Fear Memory Reconsolidation in Rats: A Similar Effect on Weak and Strong Recent and Remote Memories

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that the &beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol impairs fear memory reconsolidation in experimental animals. There are experimental parameters such as the age and the strength of memory that can interact with pharmacological manipulations of memory reconsolidation. In this study, we investigated the ability of the age and the strength o...

Scopolamine selectively disrupts the acquisition of contextual fear conditioning in rats.

Muscarinic cholinergic antagonism produces learning and memory deficits in a variety of hippocampal-dependent tasks. Hippocampal lesions produce both acquisition deficits and retrograde amnesia for contextual fear conditioning, but do not impact fear conditioning to discrete cues. In order to examine the effects of muscarinic antagonism in this paradigm, rats were given scopolamine (1 mg/kg) ei...

Development of fear acquisition and extinction in children: effects of age and anxiety.

Development of anxiety disorders is associated with neurobiological changes in areas that are a critical part of the fear neurocircuitry. Fear conditioning paradigms can offer insight into the mechanisms underlying the neurobiological ontogeny of anxiety. A small number of studies have focused on the effects of age and anxiety separately in school age children. The present study aimed to invest...

Molecular Mechanisms of Fear Learning and Memory

Pavlovian fear conditioning is a particularly useful behavioral paradigm for exploring the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory because a well-defined response to a specific environmental stimulus is produced through associative learning processes. Synaptic plasticity in the lateral nucleus of the amygdala (LA) underlies this form of associative learning. Here, we summarize the molecular...
